Tesco reduction times are fairly consistent across the UK, although they can vary slightly depending on staffing levels, how much food needs clearing, and the time of year. Still, Tesco follow a clear pattern that makes it much easier to grab a bargain if you know when to go.
I’ve had some brilliant yellow sticker finds in Tesco over the years — everything from a punnet of grapes for 9p to a pack of four delicious chicken kebabs for just 30p! If you hit Tesco at the right moment (the magic hour as some call it), you can walk away with top-quality food for pennies.
So, what time do Tesco reduce food? And is there a perfect moment to visit the reduction aisle?

What time do Tesco reduce food?
Tesco’s reduction times were supplied to me by my secret spy (every bargain hunter needs one!). They usually follow three waves of reductions. Here’s when you can expect each stage.
First reductions: around 9am
The early morning reductions tend to be quite small — usually around 10% off. A £1 bag of pasta might drop to 90p. These reductions help clear next-day stock and are perfect if you’re doing an early shop anyway.
Second reductions: around 4pm
Around 4pm, Tesco begin their second wave of markdowns. Discounts of around 30% are common here. For example, a £3 tray of minced beef might drop to around £2.10. These are solid savings and a great window for picking up dinner ingredients.
Final reductions: from around 7pm
This is where Tesco become truly exciting. In the later part of the evening — often from around 7pm — Tesco make their deepest reductions, sometimes cutting prices by up to 90%.
That means a £2 natural yoghurt might drop to 20p, or a £4 whole chicken could be sold for just 80p. These late-evening deals are the ones bargain hunters rave about.
It’s always a good idea to ask a member of staff in your local branch, as each store may have slight variations, especially on Sundays and holidays.
And a gentle reminder — if you do spot a staff member with the reduction gun, please be courteous. Don’t hover behind their shoulder or crowd them. Give them space, be respectful, and only take what you need so everyone gets a chance at a bargain.
