Ah, garlic bread! Just the mention of this aromatic delight is enough to make my mouth water. Whether it’s the warm, buttery goodness or the irresistible aroma of garlic wafting through the air, garlic bread has a special place in the hearts and stomachs of carb enthusiasts like me. The Lidl garlic bread selection might be small but it is mighty and budget friendly!
The history of garlic bread
Garlic bread may seem like a modern invention, but did you know that its roots can be traced back to ancient times. The ancient Egyptians were known to use garlic as a staple ingredient in their cuisine, and they even believed it had medicinal properties. As civilizations evolved, so did the ways in which garlic was incorporated into bread. In ancient Rome, for example, garlic was often mixed with olive oil and spread onto bread as a tasty accompaniment to meals.
Fast forward to the 20th century, and garlic bread started gaining popularity in America. Italian immigrants brought their love for garlic-infused dishes to the United States, and it didn’t take long for garlic bread to become a beloved staple in Italian-American cuisine. Today, garlic bread can be found in various forms and styles across the globe, but its essence remains the same – a heavenly combination of garlic, bread, and butter that is hard to resist.
Different types of garlic bread
Garlic bread comes in many forms, each with its own unique twist and flavour profile. One of the most common types is the classic garlic baguette. This mouthwatering creation features a French baguette sliced in half, slathered with a generous amount of garlic butter, and toasted until golden brown. The result is a crispy exterior with a soft, buttery interior bursting with garlicky goodness.
If you’re looking for a cheesier experience, look no further than cheesy garlic bread. This indulgent variation takes the classic garlic bread to a whole new level by adding a layer of ooey-gooey melted cheese on top. The combination of melted cheese and garlic-infused bread is a match made in carb heaven.
For those who prefer a more herbaceous kick, there’s the option of adding herbs like parsley, oregano, or thyme to the garlic butter mixture. These herbs not only enhance the flavour of the bread but also add a touch of freshness and vibrancy.

The classic Simply Garlic Baguette is just 37p from Lidl. Personally we can’t tell a difference between these and the more expensive Chef Select (below), and these cook really well in our air fryer for 10 minutes.

The Chef Select twin back of garlic baguettes is £1.45, and as mentioned, we really can’t tell a difference between this one and the cheaper Simply one above.

Sometimes you just need a garlic bread slice to mix things up, and you can pick up 9 garlic bread slices for £1.49.
These are great when you only want to cook a few slices and you can freeze them (more on that below) so you can just get out a couple of slices when you want to cook them.

As well as the original flavour you can also get 6 cheese and garlic slices for £1.25.

Or if you are looking for a reduced fat version then you can also pick up these 30% less fat garlic bread slices, again for £1.49.

If a garlic flatbread is more your thing then you can choose from three varieties at Lidl for £1.29. You can get a plain garlic, garlic and cheese or a tomato flatbread.
Can you freeze Lidl garlic bread?
Yes, you can absolutely freeze the garlic bread that you get from Lidl.
Freezing garlic bread is a convenient way to preserve it for later use.
You can either freeze the garlic bread in the packaging it comes in, or slice and separate the portions.
If you are separating the portions then be sure to freeze them in something airtight to prevent freezer burn. You can use freezer bags for this.
When you’re ready to eat the garlic bread, you can simply remove the desired portion from the freezer, unwrap it, and cook it in the oven or air fryer following the directions on the packet and adding 1-2 minutes if it is still frozen.
